International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21st to promote linguistic and cultural diversity around the world. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating one’s mother tongue, which is a fundamental aspect of identity and heritage. The celebration originated from the tragic events of February 21, 1952, in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), where students protesting for the recognition of Bengali as one of the national languages were brutally killed by the police. This day not only commemorates their sacrifice but also emphasizes the significance of linguistic rights and the need to safeguard languages from extinction. It encourages multilingualism and fosters mutual respect among different language communities, contributing to the promotion of peace and understanding globally. Through various cultural events, educational programs, and advocacy efforts, International Mother Language Day celebrates the beauty and richness of languages and reinforces the idea that linguistic diversity is a source of strength for societies worldwide.
